Two Hours off

Nothing Novel, been around for years: "Take Your Child to School," a National REIT created this program, which allows employees to take the first two hours of work off, paid, to take ease the transition for their children, has been a major hit!

It's the simple ideas that make the biggest Dent sometimes.

Women

I have a real example of where a woman replaced a male counterpart at a property and within 60 days the site moral, physical appearance of the site and overall financial performance were dramatically different. A change for the better in my eyes.

I read this quote the other day that I think is really begging to ring true in our industry at all levels: "As leaders, women rule: New study find that female managers outshine their male counterparts in almost every measure." -BusinessWeek

Blog

Wanted to share a project we started this year. I have been blogging, personally, since late 2004 and decided that it was time to bring that into my professional life. Insanely Great Year is the blog I created to track the fun and exciting things that are happening in our market.

It has really been a good tool to share some real time excitement with our executives, friends, family and colleagues. Our site-teams send in a lot of the material and I write a few original things to keep it fresh and up to date. It takes 5 minutes or less to post and to me the key is doing it daily. Make it a habit and watch it catch fire.

Leadership

"The role of the Director is to create a space where the actor or actress can become more than they've ever been before, more than they've dreamed of being." -Robert Altman

I think it no different in leadership. I've always said a happy employee is a productive employee. That is not to suggest that everyday is a Utopian happy fest, however it is to suggest that leaders are more apt to draw out the latent potential of others if they work on an environment that is joyous in nature. Make yourself available, approachable and real to those you lead. It takes work, God knows I have in no way mastered this one. But it's worthy of pursuit.

8 Easy Summer Water Conservation Tips

1. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your deck/patio, sidewalk or driveway.

2. Direct downspouts toward shrubs or trees.

3. Bathe your pets outdoors in an area that needs water.

4. Use a timer when watering to prevent over-watering.

5. Water early in the morning or later in the evening when there is less chance of rapid evaporation.

6. Water the roots and soil around plants rather than the leaves or flowers.

7. Deep soak your lawn, and water it less often. Less Frequently + More Thoroughly = a happy, healthy lawn.

8. Consider leaving cut grass clippings on the lawn to insulate moisture.

Problems

The problem is rarely/never the problem. The response to the problem invariably ends up being the real problem. It really is that little "it" between stimulus and response called: Choice! "It" means everything.

How many times have you faced conflict between employee's? More than than you care to admit, I assume. When two people can not come to resolution it may require your expertise in the area of mediation. One item of paramount importance is to make sure the main thing remains the main thing. Focus on the response; the real problem in conflict. As the text reads above the problem is rarely/never the real problem.

Walk the Talk

McKinsey Managing Director Al McDonald, addressing a consulting team:

"Never forget implementation, boys. In our work it's what I call the 'missing 98 percent' of the client puzzle."

Motivation

How much motivation does the Talent in your company need today? That depends on how much he/she lost yesterday.

Jerry Garcia on Leadership

Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead are famous for a number of reasons; but Leadership?

He once quipped, "You do not merely want to be the best of the best. You want to be considered the only ones who do what you do."

Remarkable, Memorable and a Bias for Action are a few things that come to mind for me when I think about being "the only ones who do what they do."
