Reminds me of a video I saw just the other day SkinnyCrop: Threadless Owners Jeffery and Jake talk about delivering awesomeness. Many of their ideas were/are born out of the question; "wouldn't it be awesome?" The part that struck me most is that they were building a site first and foremost for their friend to share awesome stuff, it just happened to turn into a business. Check it out it's well worth the time.

[update]: I just came across this Seth Godin: Doing it for free post that speaks to the same point by providing some other great examples.
